    00The week in one paragraph

Standards bodies put governance on the table. Earnings season made the agentic and CTV theses concrete. Walled gardens redefined the upfront. And we’re still waiting on the Google ad tech remedies ruling. Three threads run through everything: AI-built creative is now a sales prerequisite; CTV is no longer a sub-line item; and the supply chain’s biggest sell-side and buy-side names are publicly aligning on transparency for the first time in years. Publishers who treat May 2026 as a turning point — rather than business as usual — will be far better positioned heading into Q3.

01IAB Tech Lab forms Programmatic Governance Council

The IAB Tech Lab launched a Programmatic Governance Council on May 4 with a founders list that includes Disney, Magnite, PubMatic, Hearst, News Corp, Yahoo, Amazon Ads, The Trade Desk, Dentsu, Omnicom, WPP, Raptive and Mediavine. The council will publish a formal charter and produce an initial governance framework over the next 6–12 months. Early priorities: auction transparency, consistent transaction signal handling, and tighter alignment between buyers, sellers, and platforms.

    Publisher takeaway

Audit your supply path data for transaction ID integrity now. Ask council-member SSPs (Magnite, PubMatic, Raptive, Mediavine) what they intend to change in their auction mechanics. Get publisher voices on the workstream rosters before recommendations harden.

    02PubMatic Q1 2026 — agentic AI bet pays off

PubMatic reported on May 7: 13% YoY underlying business growth, 80%+ growth in emerging revenues, $10.7M free cash flow, 1 trillion+ daily impressions, and 30+ fully autonomous agentic campaigns live producing 80–90% setup time savings. Performance and mid-market DSP spend grew 20%+ YoY.

    Publisher takeaway

Inventory metadata is now the gating factor for agentic dollars. Audit your contextual signals, taxonomy, and brand-safety data end-to-end. Ask your account team for the lift you’re getting from mid-market and performance DSPs.

    03Magnite Q1 2026 — CTV crosses 50%, live sports surges

Magnite Q1 2026: revenue up 6% to $164.4M; CTV up 30% (now >50% of mix); March Madness up 80% YoY; full-year EBITDA margin guidance raised to ≥35.5%. SpringServe is being positioned as a unified streaming OS.

    Publisher takeaway

Renegotiate CTV terms with the new growth print as leverage. Bring at least a portion of your live inventory programmatic before football season. Consolidate your CTV ad-serving stack.

04Netflix at $3B ad revenue + AI-generated pause and midroll ads

Netflix is on track for $3B in ad revenue in 2026 (~2x 2025), with 190M global MAUs on the ad tier and 22M U.S. ad-tier subscribers. AI-generated interactive midroll and pause ad formats launch in 2026. In Q2, brands buying via Amazon DSP can apply Amazon Audiences to Netflix campaigns in the U.S.

    Publisher takeaway

Build an AI-creative-friendly ad spec sheet. Prototype your own pause/transition format. Re-pitch your audience as outcomes, not reach.

    05Reddit Q1 2026 — ad revenue +74%

Reddit Q1: revenue $663M (+69%), ad revenue $625M (+74%), Q2 guide $715M–$725M (above consensus), shares +12% on Friday. Home Depot’s Orange Apron Media made Reddit the first non-endemic platform integrated into its self-service portal; Pinterest got a similar non-endemic data activation.

    Publisher takeaway

Treat your community/comment surfaces as premium inventory. Pursue an RMN integration thesis. Make your inventory bookable in <1 hour without a sales call.

06TikTok returns to NewFronts with Streaming Ads + Logo Takeover

A year after surviving a near-ban and a court-ordered sale, TikTok came back to NewFronts with a Streaming Ads product (Smart+ AI-powered, built for streamer subscriber acquisition) and Logo Takeover (premium first-impression placement on app launch).

    Publisher takeaway

Define and price your “first impression” inventory. Build an AI creative service line for your inventory. Court streamers directly with subscriber-acquisition packages.

07Meta projected to surpass Google in 2026 global ad revenue

Projected 2026 global ad revenue: Meta $243.46B vs. Google $239.54B — first time Meta has been ahead. Meta has publicly committed that brands will be able to create and target ads using AI by end of 2026.

    Publisher takeaway

The open web isn’t losing to Google anymore — it’s losing to Meta, which has no equivalent open-web on-ramp for publishers. Close the loop to commerce. Sell first-party audiences with verified intent. Build owned distribution channels (newsletters, communities, podcasts) you fully control.

08Amazon × Samsung bring shoppable interactive TV ads to Samsung TV Plus

This summer, Samsung TV Plus viewers will see “add to cart” buttons next to on-screen products (sold on Amazon), via the Samsung Ads × Amazon DSP integration. Amazon also rolled out Prime Video Insights (beta), blending first-party data with viewership signals to map which genres, shows, and audiences led to sales.

    Publisher takeaway

Prototype shoppable creative for your CTV apps (even simple second-screen QR is a start). Pursue a retail media data partnership. Audit your OEM and SSAI revenue splits.

09IAB Tech Lab standardizes CTV Ad Portfolio signaling (pause + menu ads)

On May 6, the IAB Tech Lab opened a public comment window (closes June 5) on standardized signaling for the CTV Ad Portfolio — pause ads, menu ads, and other interactive formats. Separately, OpenRTB attribute additions for live content are in public comment until May 28.

    Publisher takeaway

Read the public comment drafts. Submit feedback before the windows close. Brief your ad ops team on the proposed attributes so you can begin mapping today’s inventory to tomorrow’s standard.

10Google ad tech antitrust — remedies decision looms

Status check: Google was found liable in April 2025 for monopolizing the publisher ad server (DFP/GAM) and ad exchange (AdX) markets. Remedies trial closed November 21, 2025. Ruling expected in 2026 — realistic window: May–October. DOJ is seeking divestiture of AdX, open-sourcing of DFP’s final auction logic, and “if necessary” divestiture of the rest of DFP/GAM.

    Publisher takeaway

Reduce single-vendor concentration in your ad-serving stack. Get impression-level data out of GAM regularly, archived, and usable independently. Keep dual-SSP relationships deep.
