The story. Amazon’s advertising tools can now build audiences from what people buy at other retailers. The data comes from Attain, a third party, and it plugs into Amazon’s DVA+ buying tool. (Adweek, 4 November 2026)

    01What happened

    • The link is Attain to DVA+. Advertisers can now target display and video ads to Amazon users who also shop at Walmart, Dollar General, Kroger, Walgreens and Sephora, among others.
    • The audiences come from purchase behavior. Segments are built from buying across tens of thousands of merchants and brands in Attain’s network.
    • The data comes from consumers who opted in. About 15 million people share purchase data with Attain through its own rewards and budgeting products.
    • Activation runs across Amazon’s reach. Segments can be used on Amazon inventory, including Prime Video, and on third-party inventory in Amazon’s network.
    • Attain’s CEO frames it as a gap closed. Brian Mandelbaum says it bridges what happens on Amazon and what happens at other retailers.
    • It is available now. Adweek’s visible text gives no pricing, geography or launch date, and part of the article sits behind a paywall.

02What it means inside a GAM network

Retail media has so far meant each retailer selling its own shoppers. This integration adds a different move: Amazon’s buying tool borrows a purchase graph it does not own, so its audiences can include people who spend their money elsewhere. The graph is a panel of 15 million volunteers, which is large but is not everyone who shops at Walmart or Kroger.

For a publisher, the effect is on where the budget lands. A brand that can reach a Kroger shopper through Amazon’s buying tool and Amazon’s reach has less reason to buy that audience from a publisher’s own deal. Segments that run on third-party inventory in Amazon’s network also compete directly with open-web supply for the same impression.

Two cautions. The coverage we could read comes from one outlet, and the paywall hides how this compares with other data partners. Attain’s CEO is the main voice, so the commercial framing is Attain’s own.

Amazon is widening who its advertisers can reach by renting a purchase graph from outside.

03What publishers should do about it

    04The bottom line

Amazon is widening who its advertisers can reach by renting a purchase graph from outside. The audience that results is built on a panel, not on all shoppers. Publishers should price their own context against it, not copy it.
